How to Search for an Xbox Gamertag

There are several ways to look up a gamertag and find a player's Xbox profile:

Using the Xbox App

  1. Open the Xbox app on your phone, tablet, or PC
  2. Tap the Search icon (magnifying glass)
  3. Type the gamertag you want to find
  4. Select the matching profile from the results
  5. You can view their profile, add them as a friend, or send a message

Using Xbox.com

  1. Go to account.xbox.com/en-us/Profile
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account
  3. Use the search bar to type the gamertag
  4. Click the profile to view their details

Using the Xbox Console

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide
  2. Go to People > Find someone
  3. Enter the gamertag and search

How to Check Xbox Gamertag Availability

The fastest way to check if a gamertag is available:

  1. Go to the gamertag change page (Settings > Account > Change gamertag)
  2. Type your desired name
  3. Click Check availability
  4. If available, it shows a green checkmark. If taken, it suggests alternatives with a # suffix

You do not need to actually change your name to check availability. You can cancel after checking.

Xbox Gamertag Stats and Profile Info

When you look up a gamertag, you can typically see:

  1. Gamerscore: total achievement points across all games
  2. Games played: list of titles on their profile
  3. Friends count: how many friends they have (if public)
  4. Bio and profile picture: their custom profile information
  5. Online status: whether they are currently online (if not set to appear offline)

Some players set their profiles to private, which limits the information visible to non-friends.

How to Find Someone's Xbox Gamertag from Minecraft

If you played with someone in Minecraft and want to find their Xbox gamertag:

  1. Open Minecraft Bedrock Edition
  2. Go to Friends > Recently Played
  3. Their gamertag should appear in the list if you played together recently
  4. Tap their name and select View Xbox Profile

Minecraft Bedrock uses Xbox Live for its account system, so every Bedrock player has an Xbox gamertag even if they play on PC, mobile, or Switch.

  2. Check during off-peak hours: the system can be slow during peak gaming hours
