SAFETY GUIDELINES

Choose a gamertag that keeps you safe and your accounts in good standing.

Protect Your Real Identity

Never use your real name, birthday, phone number, or location in your gamertag. A name like "JohnSmith2003" reveals your identity and birth year. Use creative, fictional words instead. Names like ShadowKing42 or CyberNova99 are memorable without exposing personal info.

Avoid Names That Get You Banned

Every major platform (Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Discord) enforces naming policies. Names containing profanity, slurs, hate speech, sexual content, or references to drugs and violence will result in forced name changes or account suspensions. Some platforms issue permanent bans for repeat offenses.

Quick check before committing:

  1. Would you be comfortable if a stranger read this name out loud?
  2. Does it contain words that could be misread as offensive?
  3. Does it reference real-world violence or illegal activity?

If any answer is yes, pick a different name.

Platform-Specific Rules

Xbox Live

Xbox gamertags allow up to 12 characters. The system auto-adds a numeric suffix if your chosen name is taken. Avoid special characters as support varies. Microsoft reviews reported names and can force a change without notice.

PlayStation Network (PSN)

PSN IDs allow 3-16 characters using letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores. Your first name change is free; subsequent changes cost money. Choose carefully the first time.

Steam

Steam display names can be changed freely and allow most characters. However, your Steam community URL is separate and permanent once set. Keep both appropriate.

Discord

Discord usernames must be lowercase, 2-32 characters, using letters, numbers, underscores, and periods. Display names are more flexible. Inappropriate names get flagged by community moderators.

Character Compatibility

For maximum compatibility across platforms, stick to basic letters (A-Z, a-z) and numbers (0-9). Avoid spaces, accented characters, emojis, and special symbols. PascalCase formatting (like ShadowKing) makes names readable without spaces.

Reusing Names Across Platforms

Using the same gamertag everywhere builds your brand but also means if one account is compromised, attackers know your username on other platforms. Consider slight variations for different services, or use a consistent name with unique passwords and two-factor authentication on each platform.

What To Do If Your Name Is Taken

Append a short number (2-3 digits) to your preferred name. Avoid birth years or long number strings. Try combining two words from different style categories for a unique result. The Gamertag Generator creates names from 700+ words, making it easy to find something that is not already claimed.
