Minecraft Bedrock vs Java: How Names Work
Minecraft has two editions with different account systems:
- Bedrock Edition (Windows 10/11, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Mobile): Uses your Xbox gamertag as your in-game name. Changing your Minecraft Bedrock name means changing your Xbox gamertag.
- Java Edition (Windows, Mac, Linux): Uses your Microsoft account profile name. Since Java migrated to Microsoft accounts, the name is tied to your Microsoft/Xbox profile.
Both editions now use Microsoft accounts, so your gamertag is managed through Microsoft in both cases.
How to Change Your Minecraft Gamertag
For Bedrock Edition
Since Bedrock uses Xbox gamertags, follow the Xbox name change process:
- Open the Xbox app on your phone or PC (or go to xbox.com)
- Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your Minecraft
- Go to Profile > Customize > Change gamertag
- Enter your new name and check availability
- Confirm the change
Your new name will appear in Minecraft the next time you launch the game. First change is free; subsequent changes cost around $9.99 USD.
For Java Edition
Java Edition names are now managed through your Microsoft account:
- Go to account.xbox.com
- Sign in with your Microsoft account
- Change your Xbox gamertag (this updates your Java Edition name)
- Restart Minecraft Java to see the new name
How to Add People on Minecraft Using Gamertag
Bedrock Edition
- Open Minecraft and go to the Friends tab
- Tap Add Friend
- Enter their Xbox gamertag exactly (not case-sensitive)
- Send the friend request
- Once accepted, they appear in your friends list and you can join their worlds
Cross-Platform Play
Bedrock Edition supports cross-play between Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, PC, and mobile. All players use Xbox gamertags for friend requests, regardless of their device. PlayStation players need to link their PSN account to a Microsoft account first.
How to Find Someone's Xbox Gamertag from Minecraft
- In Minecraft Bedrock, go to Friends > Recently Played
- Players you recently shared a world or server with appear here
- Their Xbox gamertag is displayed next to their skin
- Tap their name to view their Xbox profile or send a friend request
If you only remember part of the name, try searching on the Xbox app. Partial searches often return matches.
