Xbox gamertags accept uppercase and lowercase English letters (A-Z, a-z) and digits (0-9). Spaces, accented characters, emojis, underscores, and hyphens are not allowed in the gamertag itself. The display is case-insensitive, meaning "ShadowKing" and "shadowking" are treated as the same name.
When you create a new Xbox account, Microsoft assigns a random gamertag with a number suffix. You get one free name change to pick something you actually want. If you skip it, you are stuck with the auto-generated name until you pay for a change.
Classic gamertags have a 12-character limit. The newer system allows up to 12 characters for the name itself, plus an optional 4-digit suffix that Microsoft adds if the name is already taken. Our generator produces names in the 8-14 character range, and you can always drop the trailing number to fit within 12.
